Cancer Center Memoir #5 of 8 Dr. Julian Duttera Conference Center Named by Callaway Foundation Inc. Our sincere appreciation to Callaway Foundation Inc. for providing leadership in the renovation and expansion of Enoch Callaway Cancer Center by providing a $5 million matching grant toward our $10 million fundraising goal. Throughout the 20th Century, the trustees of the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation and Callaway Foundation Inc. have supported quality medical care for our co...mmunity by making grants for capital campaigns, program enhancements, and nursing education scholarships at our local hospital. Their commitment continues today, and we thank them for their generous support. In addition to naming the cancer center and lobby for Dr. Enoch Callaway Jr., Callaway Foundation trustees have chosen to memorialize long-time oncology medical director Dr. Julian Duttera with naming of the conference center.

Cancer Center Memoir #3 of 8 How did Lifesaving Cancer Care Evolve at Our Local Hospital? (Part 1) Cancer services at City-County Hospital (forerunner of Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center) were provided inside the hospital until a dedicated cancer clinic was built in 1949. Dr. Enoch Callaway Jr. served as director from the hospital's opening in 1937 until his death in 1961.

Cancer Center Memoir #3 of 8 How did Lifesaving Cancer Care Evolve at Our Local Hospital? (Part 2) The original Enoch Callaway Cancer Center (circa 1975) merged high tech and compassionate care to continue Dr. Callaway's legacy of effective cancer detection and treatment, and a Varian linear accelerator was installed to target tumors and spare healthy tissues. Dr. Hoke Wammock, Dr. Julian Duttera, and Dr. Wassim Mchayleh served as oncology medical directors in this location.

Cancer Center Memoir #2 of 8 - How did Baby Jane save thousands of lives? A native son of Troup County, Dr. Enoch Callaway Jr. began his medical practice in LaGrange in 1922. In 1923, he married Jane Louisa Jennie Crowell and their family soon included three children: Enoch III, Jane, and Sarah Sallie. When the couple lost their two-year-old daughter Jane to sarcoma of the liver in 1931, the doctor turned his full attention to the fight against cancer.... Dr. Callaway became the radiologist at Dunson Hospital from 1932 to 1937, and served as director of the cancer clinic at City-County Hospital (now Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center) from 1937 to 1961.

Cancer Center Memoir #1 of 8 - Who was Dr. Enoch Callaway Jr.? Dr. Enoch Callaway Jr. (1892-1961) was nationally recognized as a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. A native of LaGrange, Dr. Callaway received his medical degree from Tulane University in New Orleans before volunteering for the U.S. Navy during WWI. He returned to LaGrange to practice and became one of the founders of the Georgia Division of the American Cancer Society. As chairman of their exec...utive committee, he led a statewide educational campaign against cancer quackery and oversaw the funding of cancer detection, research, and treatment facilities throughout the state. His achievements were recognized by the American Cancer Society and the Medical Association of Georgia. The original Enoch Callaway Cancer Center at West Georgia Medical Center was dedicated in his name in 1975. We are proud to continue to recognize his contributions by rededicating our local cancer center in his memory in 2020. See more
