Gout and the Holidays! ‘Tis the season to be surrounded by family and friendsand lots of food that could trigger a gout attack. If the joint of your big toe is hot, swollen, red and it’s unbearable to allow anything to touch itthere’s a chance you could have Gout. Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis caused by a build-up of Uric Acid levels in the affected person’s body. While the production of Uric Acid is a normal process of human metabolism, increased levels in your ...blood could cause an attack of Gout. With a little planning, you can still enjoy seasonal treats while keeping your gout risk low. The key to a gout-friendly diet is to avoid foods and drinks high in purines. They're most commonly found in meats (especially organ meats), seafood, beer, beans, and some vegetables. If you take prescription medications for gout, don't forget to make sure ahead of time that you have enough medicine on hand to make it through days when your doctor is not available or pharmacies are closed. If you feel like you may have a case of Gout or another painful foot related ailment please contact West Georgia Podiatry for effective, personal and professional treatment. It’s almost Halloween and you know what that meansit’s time for trick-or-treating! Walking around with your kids for a few hours may become a bit intense for your feet. Be sure to wear comfortable, supportive shoes, and be sure your little monsters do too. Not only will good shoes keep their feet warm and comfy, they're more likely to protect the feet from danger like broken glass, slippery smashed pumpkins and wet leaves. Make sure that your shoes fit properly. Purchase new shoes later in the day when feet tend to be at their largest and replace worn out shoes as soon as possible. Select and wear the right shoe for the activity that you are engaged in (i.e. running shoes for running). Alternate shoes - don't wear the same pair of shoes every day. Don’t compromise comfort and safety when picking the right shoes to wear. Narrow shoes, overly high-heeled ones or shoes that aren't worn very oft...en, such as dress shoes, can irritate feet and lead to blisters, calluses, swelling and even severe ankle injuries. To ward off problems, choose a shoe that has a low heel and fits your foot in length, width and depth while you are standing. Be proactive, protective and preventive with your selection of appropriate shoes for the occasion. We offer medical pedicures that are sterile and diabetic-friendly. By using a disposable foot spa system with single-use liners and sterilized equipment, we eliminate the possible contamination found in regular nail salons from non-sterilized basins, filters, magnetic jets, and not fully sterilized tools. In our facility, our nail polish is infused with anti-fungal medication; and our brushes are never shared between clients. West Georgia Podiatry Medi Foot Spa 770-832-3546 www.MediFootSpa.com

Are you embarrassed by the prominent branching veins visible on your thighs and lower legs, known as spider veins? Do you avoid wearing shorts or swimming apparel in the summer because you don’t want others to see your spider veins on your legs? Spider veins are tiny red, blue or purple thread-like veins near the surface of the skin that look like a spider's web. These dilated and visible veins are caused by increased pressure inside the veins. You may not be thinking of wear...ing shorts or a swim suit this time of year, but if you have spider veins, this is the time to treat them. Are you tired of your spider veins and want them gone? West Georgia Podiatry provides laser leg vein treatment. The procedure uses a focused beam of light to target the spider vein without damaging nearby tissue. The laser heats and destroys the spider vein and it disappears over a period of four to six weeks. Call to schedule 770-832-3546 Now is the time to treat spider veins! www.MediFootSpa.com See more

As you are planning Halloween costumes, keep in mind these foot safety tips from West Georgia Podiatry! Halloween Foot Safety Tip #1: Skip the costume footwear. Make sure your child’s footwear fits and is suitable for outdoor wear. Costume footwear is usually made from cheap materials. Flimsy materials provide your child’s feet with little support and inadequate protection from injuries. Additionally, over-sized shoes can cause your child to trip and fall. Therefore, over-s...ized shoes should be avoided. Sandals and flip-flops also aren’t good shoe choices either. They expose your child’s feet to potential cuts and scrapes. Sneakers are a better choice for your child. Make sure your child’s footwear is waterproof if wet weather is predicted for Halloween. Also, have your little one wear warm socks to protect against the cold. Tip #2: Have your child wear face paint or a makeup instead of a mask. Masks can limit your child’s vision which puts them at risk for potential slips, trips, and falls. Tip #3:Make sure your child’s costume isn’t too long. Extra material on a princess gown or super-hero pants can cause your child to trip, fall and injure themselves. Hem up your child’s costume if it falls below the ankle to prevent foot and ankle injuries. See more
