Wilson Pools 16.12.2020

Winter is coming, and just because you do not swim in your pool when it is cold, does not mean you can forget about it. Follow this series of posts to learn how we should care for our pools during the winter months. #Winteriscoming #winterpoolcare Lower temperatures slow everything down, this includes chemical reactions. In particular, the chemical reactions that organisms need to function and reproduce. You may have noticed that you do not have to cut your grass as often i...n the winter, and that is for the same reason why many animals hibernate. Less sun means less energy, energy that is required for things to survive. Like plants, algae use sunlight to produce the sugars it needs to survive, photosynthesis. During the summer months, algae can reproduce every 3-6 hours. This means that every 3-6 hours, the number of algae spores in your pool DOUBLES! This is what makes it possible for you to wake up to a green pool with little warning. In the winter algae reproduction slows, which means the amount of chlorine and filtration necessary to keep you from waking up to a backyard swamp is also reduced. While one look at an algae bloom in a pool can easily postpone a pool party, it is not actually dangerous to our health. However, the fact that algae can survive in a pool is a good indicator that chlorine levels may be low enough to allow bacteria and other parasites to also survive. Although you cannot see them, bacteria and parasites can cause illness and is the true reason we need to sanitize our pools, usually with chlorine. So all of this means that we need to assume that there is always algae in our pool, whether or not there is enough to make the water look green, and we need to maintain a chlorine level of at least 2-4 ppm to combat there incredible growth rate and have enough left over to also kill the bacteria and parasites that can make our families sick. In the winter, slower algae growth means less chlorine is required kill them and have the residual that keeps everyone safe and happy in our pools. As the weather cools down, we at Wilson Pools recommend that you cut back on the amount of chlorine tablets that you use or even switch to granular Cal-Hypo shock. You can always bring a water sample to our store and we can help you develop your winter pool-care plans. See more

His passion for problem solving and his ability to communicate effecitvely have been invaluable assets this season.
