#GivingTuesday is here, and what a year it's been for supporting each other. The pandemic has affected each of us in some way, shape or form, be it personally,... professionally, or otherwise. For us at Zoo Atlanta, we faced having to close our gates for two months -- a challenge unheard-of in our long history. While the Zoo was able to reopen in May, our extreme commitment to doing so safely has meant that our visitor capacity has been significantly reduced, and as a result, our attendance has been tracking at just 50 to 60% of last year's visitation. Throughout this crisis, however, Zoo Atlanta has had an opportunity to shine in so many ways. We've been able to show the world that no matter what, superior animal care is our number-one priority and is never compromised. We've been able to demonstrate our creativity, our innovation, our resourcefulness, our ability to work together, and the spirit of resilience that has always defined our organization. We know our community's needs are many, and we appreciate anything you choose to do to support your community today. As we hope you’ve learned in visiting the Zoo, especially at educational complexes like Trader’s Alley, many of the species who call Zoo Atlanta home are direct...ly impacted by the illegal international commercial wildlife trade. But this problem doesn’t just affect other species it affects us too. This trade results in humans having very close and unprotected contact with a variety of wild animal species that would not normally contact humans, or other species, on a regular basis. This gives pathogens that have evolved in non-human species a golden opportunity to jump to other hosts, such as humans, and pandemics can quickly gain a foothold in a global human population.
