Posted for a neighbor. Hello! I wanted to reach out to everyone and share a great opportunity to learn more about self-defense as a parent. I am a Mom of 3 young kids and we live in Brookhaven. I have always loved where I live and my neighborhood, but I do get concerned how vulnerable I feel when out with my kids either on a walk or loading up groceries to the store, etc. With the current crime in Atlanta I have felt this even more frequently. I feel it’s a whole differen...t ball game when it comes to having children as distractions, no hands free, probably have no idea where my phone is, and knowing that most of these crimes are happening in broad day light. I reached out to the local Government with my concerns and since there wasn’t something already, Brookhaven Police Department was nice enough to offer to host a two-part class for its community members. We held this class in August via Zoom and it was a huge success so we decided to offer a second class to accommodate more people who had an interest. The first class is to learn about self-defense law and your rights. This is a mandatory class in order to take a follow-up hands on class (women only). We currently don’t have the second hands on class scheduled due to Covid but hope to soon. Info for first online class about Self- Defense Law (Men and Women can attend) DATE: Tuesday, September 28th TIME: 6:30 PM - 8 PM A ZOOM link will be sent to those who register. To register, please email Sergeant Kevin Martinez at [email protected] with the info that you want to attend the virtual self-defense class. Please do so by Monday, September 27. Heads up - spotting an Eastern European/Russian hack:

All - the principal at Ashford Park just let some of us know that there was vandalism to the Ashford Park School field last night (or this weekend). Curse words were spray painted on the basketball blacktop. Cameras are being reviewed and the police have been contacted, but if you ever see the field / playground equipment / blacktop being mistreated - please say something or let the school know. If you happen to know anything about this incident, please contact the school.

Pedestrian Safety O.C.G.A 40-6-91 (a) The driver of a vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian to cross the roadway within a crosswalk w...hen the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching and is within one lane of the half of the roadway on which the vehicle is traveling or onto which it is turning. For the purposes of this subsection, "half of the roadway" means all traffic lanes carrying traffic in one direction of travel. Let’s stay safe Brookhaven! On Buford Hwy you may have noticed the crosswalks with flashing lights. DRIVERS, when approaching a crosswalk that has been manually activated, the driver must slow down upon seeing flashing yellow lights, stop on solid red, and proceed once the pedestrian has crossed and the light begins flashing red. Regardless if a pedestrian is crossing, solid red lights are equivalent to a stop sign, you must stop and look both ways before proceeding. Once a pedestrian has fully crossed that driver’s half of the roadway, the driver may proceed once clear. PEDESTRIANS O.C.G.A 40-6-91 states, No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impractical for the driver to yield. If there is a crosswalk available, use it. BPD has seen one too many pedestrians hit by vehicles causing injuries and some fatalities. Let’s stay aware, safe, and cautious when on roadways.

FRAUD ALERT: new phishing scam, email or text (supposedly) from your bank with a link that looks like your banks address, saying there is fraud on your account. Do NOT click on the link, always go directly to your bank's website, or call directly, to check such things. The link they send is phishing for your information.

WANTED - assault at Lenox

Brookhaven’s city leaders passed an ordinance Tuesday night that imposes a fine between $500 and $1,000 for violators, who could also receive up to six months in jail. In addition, vehicles used in a street race can be impounded for 30 days or until the case is settled.
