Children aren’t able to receive the feedback necessary to ensure water safety and skill progression through online learning resources. This feedback is critical in ensuring the proper skills are being taught and retained. Should all other safety precautions fail, water safety and survival skills can save a child’s life if they ever find themselves in the water unexpectedly!

You may be thinking, I can learn swim techniques online and teach my child to swim without formal lessons. Think again! With a skill as important as swimming, it’s critical that children learn from instructors who receive formal, ongoing training through reputable organizations. This training could mean the difference between knowing what to do and what not to do during an emergency!

COVID-19 restrictions in California now include language deeming swim lessons essential! The COVID-19 pandemic requires the state and local health departments to remain vigilant but leaders in the drowning prevention community, including the California Coalition for Children’s Safety and Health (CCCSH), agree that drowning prevention is just as important and can be done safely, even during this pandemic. While we are hopeful that more states will follow their lead, this designation will make a significant impact in preventing drownings in the state of California. Learning to swim is a life-or-death skill, essential for every child. For more information, read The United States Swim School Association's (USSSA) press release on our blog! https://bit.ly/3nfpSHq

While children can learn many things online, it’s important for them to experience water survival training in a controlled environment. It’s this type of experiential training that can prevent panic and save a child from drowning during a real-life water accident!

As with other children’s activities, repetition is important to learning swim skills, but so is the environment where the practice is taking place. Swim skills are mastered by DOING alongside highly trained and certified instructors in the water to assist you. You cannot replicate swim lessons online without putting your safety at risk!

The truth is, there is a huge difference between swimming and all other youth activities. While many children’s activities serve primarily to meet kids’ recreational needs, learning to swim is about drowning prevention. Participation in formal swim programs, such as those offered by British Swim School, can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children who are most at risk for accidental death by drowning!
