Get your art supplies ready, because this year’s NOAA Marine Debris Program Art Contest is officially open! Students in grades K-8 can submit their artwork (electronically or by mail) now through December 10th that answers the questions: How does marine debris impact the oceans and Great Lakes? What are you doing to help prevent marine debris?... Contest winners will be featured in a 2023 calendar! Visit their website to check out last year's winners and download the contest entry form and flyer. Please feel free to reach out with any questions. https://marinedebris.noaa.gov/annual-noaa-marine-debris-pro

We wanted to share a cool project that Burton 4-H Center's living shoreline got to be a part of recently! All this information was provided to us by Alexandra Muscalus, a Ph.D. student from Georgia Tech who is working with Associate Professor, Dr. Kevin Haas. By measuring waves and currents on the Living Shoreline, they will determine just how much the Living Shoreline is reducing these erosive forces. The results will be used to evaluate the possibility of building living shorelines in the Savannah River and promote successful living shoreline installation around the world! Check out these photos and captions to see the tools they used to collect data on Horsepen Tidal Creek!

Fishing for a new year! . . . Ft. Chip, a wild dolphin! (Not a paid dolphin actor) Take a look at Chip’s dorsal fin if you are puzzled by its name! Chip is strand feedinga learned hunting method that only a handful of dolphins use. Strand feeding has been seen in the Low country and a few other parts of the world! No treats were given...remember don’t feed the wildlife! #bottlenosedolphin #strandfeedingdolphins #horsepentidalcreek #Happynewyear!
