It’s 2 a.m., and you wake to loud, intermittent bangs outside. You look out your bedroom window and see fireworks exploding overhead. What can you do? The City ...of Milton has stringent policies in place aimed at protecting people and animals (especially in our vibrant equestrian community) from such disturbances. Not only can fireworks be harmful to whomever sets them off, they can spur extreme, potentially dangerous reactions by veterans with PTSD and horses or other sensitive animals. This is why the City only allows loud noises such as those caused by many fireworks on a handful of nights each year. The next one coming up is New Year’s Eve (and into 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day). Any loud fireworks beyond that are not permitted. Still, while the City is prepared to enforce noise ordinance violations (caused by fireworks), we cannot do it alone. Short of cloning police officers to station 24/7 on on every street corner, Milton Police need the public’s help. If you notice fireworks at non-allowed times, here’s how you can be involved: 1) Don’t hesitate. There’s only so much that police can do with after-the-fact reports. Contact police right away while the fireworks are going off. 2) You can do that by calling 678-297-6300, then pressing option No. 1 3) Explain to the officer with as much precision as possible what you’re seeing and exactly where. (Even then, it’s important to understand that pinpointing exactly the source of any solitary firework from miles away can be very difficult.)
