#TrainingTuesday. FLETC recently conducted a Foreign Affairs Counter Threat (FACT) training program at its Cheltenham, Maryland training delivery point. The FACT training is a general security awareness program designed to prepare personnel and adult family members from all backgrounds to live and work overseas. The training is a student-centered approach to security awareness and situational response which includes classroom sessions and practical applications, culminating in final exercise scenarios. This training included members from @USAID, @SecretService, @TSA, and @USCG. #DHS #FLETC

We remember Border Patrol Agent Manuel Salcido, Jr., U.S. Department of Justice, Immigration and Naturalization Service, U.S. Border Patrol, who was killed in the line of duty on Jan. 2, 1985 in an automobile accident. Agent Salcido was en route to the Del Rio Sector Headquarters, Texas in a confiscated sedan when the vehicle spun out of control on an ice-covered bridge and struck an oncoming vehicle. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers’ Graduates Memorial honors FLETC basic graduates such as Agent Salcido who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation since FLETC’s inception in 1970. #DHS #FLETC #USBP The United States Department of Justice

#TrainingTuesday. The International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) program is a U.S. Department of State: Bureau of Intl Narcotics & Law Enforcement (INL) sponsored global law enforcement and criminal justice training initiative with facilities in Africa, Asia, Central America, Europe and the United States. #FLETC continues to play an important role in the positive global impact and support for federal law enforcement international operations through the ILEA program. The Di...rector of ILEA Gaborone, a FLETC staff member, is responsible for enhancing the Partner Nation portfolio through programmatic delivery and daily operations. FLETC also conducts virtual and export ILEA training on a recurring basis. ILEA Gaborone graduate Jose Blanchard Bokandza, a Republic of Congo Park Ranger (seated in the tiger striped utility uniform), and his team, routinely operate in the Congo River Basin, one of the most heavily forested areas in the world where Gabon, Cameroon and the Republic of Congo intersect. Employing skill sets gained during Wildlife Trafficking Investigators training facilitated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Agent Bokandza and his team successfully seize and preserve evidence of wildlife poaching and trafficking. The ILEA program serves U.S. and Partner Nation interests by leveraging U.S. Federal Law Enforcement agency subject matter expertise and curricula to combat Transnational Organized Crime and the spread of violent extremism through world-class training delivery. #DHS #FLETC #lawenforcement

#TrainingTuesday. Driving simulators allow law enforcement students to interact with specifically-designed driving scenarios. The simulators can replicate several different vehicles in a variety of situations. The road surface, tire friction, vehicle weight, steering, braking, acceleration characteristics, and view are designed to give the feeling of driving an actual vehicle. Students spend time on the simulators to prepare for driver training on Glynco’s ten miles of driving ranges. #FLETC #DHS

February is Black History Month. It is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. The theme for this year is Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. This theme explores the African dispersion and the spread of families across the United States. President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, and since then, every February is designated as Black History Month by the President with an endorsed specific theme. #FLETC #DHS #BlackHistoryMonth

#FollowFriday. U.S. Coast Guard. It is great to have the #USCG as part of our U.S. Department of Homeland Security family. This week in 1915, President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the Act to Create the Coast Guard. This combined the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service to form the Coast Guard we know today. #FLETCNeverForgets. We remember Special Agent Julie Y. Cross, U.S. Department of the Treasury, United States Secret Service (USSS). On June 4, 1980, Agent Cross was shot and killed during a robbery attempt while she and her partner were working undercover monitoring a counterfeit suspect near the Los Angeles Airport. The two assailants in the shooting were unrelated to the agents’ investigation. Agent Cross’ killer was captured 12 years later, convicted of murder, and senten...ced to death. Prior to being hired by the USSS, Agent Cross served with the San Diego Police Department for two years. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers’ Graduates Memorial honors FLETC basic graduates such as Special Agent Cross, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation since FLETC’s inception in 1970. #DHS #FLETC

FLETC staff, participating organizations, and contractors are #InThisTogether to mitigate the risk of #COVID19 at the Centers’ training delivery points. To date, we have conducted more than 10,000 COVID-19 tests as part of our overall risk mitigation strategy. In addition to testing, FLETC pre-screens students prior to their arrival, mandates masks in all situations where social distancing is not possible, and conducts daily temperature checks upon entering all FLETC training delivery points. Following these procedures, FLETC’s COVID-19 risk mitigation strategy is one of the best in the country. #FLETC #DHS

Reducing the risk of exposure to #COVID19 by cleaning and disinfecting is an important part of maintaining a low risk environment. Let’s do our part to prevent the spread of #COVID19. While attending training at FLETC, please be mindful of Social Distancing Guidelines. The CDC recommends maintaining at least six feet or two meters distance from others whenever possible, this includes FLETC transportation bus stops, and while in high-traffic areas at FLETC such as the dorms, gym and dining hall. Special Agent Heath died on April 1, 1973, from complications of a gunshot wound he received during an undercover operation in Aruba, Netherlands Antilles, in February 1973, while serving with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
