30+ years serving you...Thanks Hugh! Our Commissioner’s Merit Award winner is District Asphalt Manager Hugh Turnley, a 30-plus year GDOT employee, who consistently exceeds at his job duties. Workdays begin before 6 a.m. and include scheduling personnel, equipment, workflow and safety. Many days Hugh clocks out after 6 p.m. He coordinates crews and equipment that respond to snow and ice, tornado, and hurricane events for the District. He leads these crews and equipment to ...the event site and dispatches them according. During three recent hurricanes, Turnley logged 630 hours as a lead manager for each event. Also, in a five-day snow and ice span, he led special outfits from west Atlanta to Savannah removing ice from major interstates and local routes. Hugh continues work as a Navy Executive Officer in the Naval Reserves. Because of his strong faith and commitment to the Department and employees, Hugh is an irreplaceable asset.

Fall Line Freeway widening project plans launch virtually today Georgia DOT is seeking feedback about a proposed Washington County solution to finalize four-lane widening on the recently constructed Fall Line Freeway by widening the existing highway from east of Chambers Brooks Spring Road to west of Helton Lane. The original construction project had to reroute on the existing SR 24 due to a slope failure north of the current travel lanes. $20 million I-20 capital project going well The active Pittman Construction project from Thomson to Crawfordville is progressing toward spring 2021 completion. Full-depth slab replacement is 99 percent done. We have located a few more places that require slab replacement on both East and Westbound directions. GDOT plans to go back and replace these slabs, but the contract supplemental agreement is ongoing.... GrindingContractors have passed the 50 percent completion mark. This process (photos) works in conjunction with pavement rehab activities to restore rideability by removing surface irregularities. Asphalt Shoulder PatchingShoulder paving between Exits 160 and 172 East and Westbound is active. The shoulder paving will continue in various locations on the project this fall. Appling-Harlem Interchange rebuild on schedule United Infrastructure Group continues progress on the $8.496 million reconstruction of Exit 183 @ I-20. This project will relocate Nature’s Way, widen the bridge and build two roundabouts at both ramp locations funding by Georgia Transportation Investment Act - TIA Currently, crews are wrapping up construction of the new Nature’s Way. Graded aggregate base (rock) and asphalt should go down within the next two weeks. ... As for the US 221 bridge, the intermediate bent is almost complete, and teams will pour the cap by mid-November. Contractors will begin driving bridge piles for the end bent and building the mechanically stabilized earth wall in late November. This project is on schedule for a late summer 2022 completion. $11 million for new bridges OTW Four east central Georgia counties will benefit from $11.4 million in bridge replacement and roadway approach rebuild projects awarded. Burke County... .227 miles of bridge and approaches on State Route (SR) 56 over Mill Creek 5.8 miles NE of Midville United Infrastructure Group $2.418 million Completion expected by July 31, 2021. The bridge on SR 56 over Mill Creek was built in 1926 and widened in 1960 and does not meet current design load standards. An off-site detour will be required as a more cost effective and shorter construction duration solution. The estimated construction time is six months using Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques. Laurens County .454 miles of bridge and approaches on SR 29 over Pughes Creek seven miles east of Dublin in East Dublin Southern Concrete Construction Company $4.761 million Completion expected by Sept. 30, 2021. The new bridge will be built to the SW of the existing bridge using staged construction. Improvements will include eight-foot shoulders on both sides. Newton County .256 miles of bridge and approaches on County Road 213 over West Bear Creek west of Mansfield Williams Contracting Company $1.258 million Completion expected by Aug. 31, 2021. This bridge is deficient and requires posting due to beam and column cracking. This is replaced under GDOT’s Low Impact Bridge Program. An off-site detour is required. Warren County .570 miles of bridge replacement on SR 16 at Rocky Comfort Creek 2.5 miles SW of Warrenton Gregory Bridge Company $3.031 million Completion expected by March 31, 2022. Crews will construct a new roadway alignment next to the existing bridge built in 1937, offset to the southeast of SR 16. There isn’t an off-site detour proposed. #bridges #infrastructure #GDOT

Grovetown I-20 night work returns Tuesday... The east area past Exit 190 is due for more night maintenance to correct concrete issues. Georgia DOT crews will enter the roadway earlier each night to be gone prior to morning rush hour the following day. Weather permitting, Georgia DOT district bridge crews start at 6 p.m. Tuesday night and work through to the following morning at 6 a.m. This night time schedule will continue through Thursday night. ... change for Grovetown I-20 work Georgia DOT maintenance crews have the following plans for the mile 190-192 area: Single-lane closure tonight by 9 p.m. to seal the two newly poured concrete slabs... The closure will be out of the interstate by 3 a.m. Friday. Crews will not work Friday night or this weekend. We will reassess and make a determination Monday on the best course of action to repair remaining slab issues marked in the area. An official announcement of that plan will be released when available first thing this coming week. Sandersville RRX detour coming out Friday The two-week Fall Line Freeway detour for an extension of the Sandersville Railroad's track line is due to end by tomorrow afternoon. The roadway closed to through traffic at Ridge Road Oct. 2 to allow contract work across the highway. Pittman Construction will return after Friday to complete other work items but the roadway won't close for these activities....
