As we say goodbye to October and hello to November we close our #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth with Wyatt! Here’s a note from Mom: Like many kids with Down syndrome, Wyatt has Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a motor planning speech disorder. In order for speech to occur, messages need to go from your brain to your mouth. These messages tell the muscles how and when to move to make sounds. When a child has apraxia of speech, the messages do not get through correctly. The child mi...ght not be able to move their lips or tongue in the right ways, even though their muscles are not weak. The child knows exactly what he wants to say, so the problem is not with how he thinks, but how his brain tells the mouth to move. Wyatt has been receiving intensive speech therapy from a very young age to help with his speech abilities. Virtual speech therapy during the pandemic has been especially challenging for Wyatt. So one day, Fozzie Bear and Officer So & So made an appearance to help out with Wyatt's therapy session with his favorite speech therapist at school. Hope you enjoyed learning more about Down syndrome! : Thanks to April Swisher-Hartle for sharing all of Wyatt’s awesomeness with us! See more
