This deserves a share. RIP, Manly Pointer.
And they say books have lost their relevancy.
All--this time last year I was celebrating the beginning of my journey to open a bookstore by attending the American Booksellers' Association's Winter Institute in Seattle. I was full of hope and excitement and dreams of the future. My goal was to have the store open by my 35th birthday, which is coming up in May. Life has, alas, gotten in the way and that particular goal is no longer feasible. BUT. I wanted to let you, my supporters and fellow book-lovers, know that this dream is far from dead. It is going to take longer than I hoped to get the doors open, but open them I shall. Keep your eyeballs on this page, friends. Keep the dream alive. Love, Amy
Hey everyone! Today is Jane Austen's birthday. Couldn't let that one go by without a virtual high five to my favorite manners satirist.
Here's a thing for you.
Remember me? Hopefully I won't be on a once-a-month schedule forever, but Life continues to win over Dream right now. Here's a piece that is blowing my mind about a library to be published in the future. Wish I could live forever so I could see it!
Neglectfulness continues apace, but hopefully will abate now that life is calming down a skosh. For the nonce, here is a link to a topic that fascinates the mess out of me--how we create pictures of characters in our minds when we read. (I don't really know where all those weird vocabulary words came from but it feels right, so, there you are.)
I have been downright neglectful of this page of late. My apologies, all. Stupid busy real life and it's stupid face. Here's a little gem I rediscovered the other day. Reacting negatively to a main character is always an uncomfortable and interesting experience, doubly so when that character is female.
Crones of the world, unite!
Another plug for The Bitter Southerner. Great journalism about my favorite place--The South. Here they are delving into bookstores! Mayhaps one day Inkling will be on this list... :)
This makes me pretty darn happy. If you haven't read Neil Gaiman's American Gods you should. Actually a pretty great summer read, right alongside Anansi Boys. Also, Neil Gaiman is a friend of indie bookstores so I heart him forever.
I've been thinking about how much people read on the internet. Those same people often say they don't have time to read or don't like to read. If you don't finish reading anything else this week, try reading this.
