It’s #ScholarSunday, y’all! Today, we want you to meet someone really special: Khadijah (@Commissioner Khadijah Abdur-Rahman), an alum of the JRF Scholarship! Khadijah’s story is one that will leave you inspired, beginning when she was a domestic abuse survivor, homeless, and weighed 500lbs. She made a decision for herself and for her family - that she wanted education to be her anchor and her path to a better life. As a JRF Scholar, Khadija graduated from Atlanta Metropolita...n College with her Associate’s degree, then transferred to Georgia State University to receive her Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. Her educational journey didn’t stop there - her love for criminal justice and education took her to study law at Florida Coastal School of Law, where she specialized in Family Law. Khadijah is truly a force to be reckoned with. She served as a board member for Legal Aid Atlanta - an organization she once received assistance from. She spent years working in the community, dedicating her life to being a voice for social and economic justice. She serves with many nonprofit organizations that help the youth, the elderly, and houseless individuals. She has been a champion for many minority communities, leading protests against organizations that treat mistreat African Americans. She even owns a business, Jakar LLC, that provides jobs to many community members! Most recently and most notably, we are proud of Khadijah for being elected as the Fulton County Commissioner for District 6! She was overwhelmingly elected with a 16 point lead by her district. She is also the first Muslim woman to hold an elected office in Georgia. Khadijah’s story highlights just how impactful education can be. The JRF and Emerge Scholarships are crucial because they give women a chance, women just like Khadijah, to create an amazing life for themselves, their families, and their communities. We aim to empower women by making education - and therefore other opportunities - more accessible. If you are touched by Khadijah’s story and feel like a scholarship could help you achieve your personal dreams, too, apply today! Applications are open, so make sure you submit your application and share with your friends and family! Share this post with your followers, too, because you never know whose life you might change. Happy #SuffrageSaturday, everyone! Today, we want to introduce you to Anne Henrietta Martin. Martin was born on September 30, 1875 in Empire City, Nevada to a very traditional mother and a very open-minded father. Her father led the way for Martin to have a very ambitious life. Martin graduated high school in 1891 even though she was told she needed to stay in school another year. Martin instead enrolled in Nevada State University and tested in as a sophomore. She graduated ...with her first B.A. degree at the age of 19, and then Martin transferred to Leland Stanford Junior University where she received a B.A. and then an M.A. in history. After her education, Martin joined the faculty of Nevada State University and founded their history department. After serving as faculty, Martin studied and traveled across the world. Her travels introduced her to many feminist causes. In 1912, Martin returned to Nevada and was elected president of the Nevada Equal Franchise Society, which aided in passing the first suffrage legislation in Nevada. Martin ran the campaign that won women’s suffrage with the popular vote in Nevada on November 3, 1914. Martin was part of many organizations, including the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the National Woman’s Party, the Nevada Educational Survey Commission, and the Nevada Women’s Civic League. She also wrote many pieces on political and economic subjects and women’s equality. Her career in politics reached a high point when Martin ran as an independent candidate for the U.S. Senate from Nevada in 1918 and 1920. She stood as a champion for the health of mothers and children, and she advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment and other such bills that would help women achieve equality. Today, we want you to meet one of our amazing Scholars, Stacey! Stacey is a New JRF Scholar pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Social Work at Saginaw Valley State University. She plans to pursue a Master's... Degree immediately upon receiving her Bachelors by applying to the Advanced Standing Master's Program at the University of Michigan. Her goal is to begin her career as a professional social worker in the substance abuse field. Stacey plans to help those who are in the midst of combating substance abuse. The primary purpose of her career will be to advocate for those who are oppressed and mitigate the issues involving substance abuse. Her personal story of freedom from addiction as well as the reception of her degree will provide a well rounded perspective that she can bring to the field of Social Work. Here’s what Stacey has to say about how her life has influenced her educational path: As I once needed help overcoming displacement, food insecurity, substance abuse issues and unemployment, my experience will help me advocate for any of those people currently enduring these conditions. Happy Halloween and happy Saturday! Today, we’d like to take a moment of this #SuffrageSaturday before introducing you to our next suffragist to remind you that Election Day is quickly approaching. If you haven’t already voted by mail or early, November 3rd is the absolute last day to cast your ballot. #SuffrageSaturday began at JRF to serve as a reminder of the long and difficult fight that hundreds upon hundreds of activists have had to endure to ensure that the right to v...ote is extended to all. We urge you to vote not only to help this generation and future generations, but also to honor those who fought so vigorously for the right in the first place. Let us introduce you to another one of those fighters: Dora Lewis. Dora, born in Pennsylvania, was a very active suffragist. In 1913, Lewis became an executive member of the National Woman's Party (NWP). In July 1917, she spent three days in jail for picketing. She was again arrested in November 1917 and sentenced to 60 in a workhouse. On November 14th, known as the Night of Terror, the superintendent of the Occoquan Workhouse, W.H. Whittaker, ordered Lewis, along with other arrested suffragists, to be beaten. Lewis suffered from a guard throwing her against an iron bed, causing her head to bleed severely. In August 1918, Lewis was arrested once more at the Lafayette Square meeting and spent another 15 days in jail. In January 1919, she participated in the watchfire demonstrations where she set fire to copies of President Woodrow Wilson’s speeches on democracy. She was arrested and spent 5 days in jail. Despite her multiple arrests and the violence she endured, Lewis remained dedicated to the cause. She became the chairwoman of finance for the NWP in 1918 and the national treasurer in 1919. In 1920, she led the ratification committee for NWP. She traveled to many states to encourage ratification. Happy Friday! It’s the last Friday before the election, which means it’s the last day to vote early! If you don’t want to wait in longer lines on Election Day, consider taking time today to go vote! If you are still planning to vote by absentee ballot, mailing it may mean your ballot won’t reach the office before November 3rd. We STRONGLY encourage you to drop the ballot off at a ballot drop box near you. Find your closest one here: https://gaballotdropbox.org/ We also wanted... to use today’s #VoterEngagement post to provide you with some reasons that voting is crucial! You may resonate with one or all of these reasons - the more, the better! 1. Help pass policies you believe in. 2. Elect people you believe in to office. 3. Speak up for those who can’t. 4. Make your voice heard. 5. It’s a right some of us didn’t always have. 6. Honor those who fought for suffrage. 7. Help leave a brighter future for younger generations. 8. Set a good example for your kids, grandkids, and the younger children in your community. No matter why you vote, know that your voice and your vote matter. Make sure it's counted by November 3rd. #Vote #Elections #VoterEducation #StayInformed #StayEducated #UseYourVoice #RightToVote #JRF
