The Everson Museum of Art opens 52 Years Ago: September 27, 1968 When the Everson Museum of Art opened its present quarters in 1968, it was dubbed "a work of ...art for works of art." As the first museum designed by internationally-acclaimed architect I. M. Pei, the Everson's design has been credited with launching Pei's world-famous career and putting the museum at the forefront of contemporary architecture. The Everson Museum of Art's roots extend back to the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts, which was founded in 1897 by George Fisk Comfort, a well-known art educator who also helped establish the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts' inaugural exhibition was held in 1900. Within twenty years of its founding, the Syracuse Museum made two character-setting decisions under the leadership of Fernando Carter, the second director of the Museum. In 1911, the Everson declared that it would collect only American art, the first museum to do so. This decision led to a permanent collection comprised largely of American paintings, sculpture, drawings and graphics that date from colonial times to present day. The Everson's second decision set the course for the Museum's long-term commitment to the ceramic arts. In 1916, a group of porcelains was purchased from Syracuse potter Adelaide Alsop Robineau, who is today considered one of America's finest ceramists and whose work is known throughout the world. Over the years the Museum had several homes, such as the Onondaga Savings Bank and the Syracuse Public Library. The rapidly expanding museum outgrew each facility. In 1941, Helen Everson made a gift to the City of Syracuse to be used for the sole purpose of erecting a museum dedicated to art appreciation and education. #cnyhistory https://everson.org/ Photo Captions: The present Everson Museum site before demolition of buildings located there; the prepared Everson Museum site; Everson Museum of Art, 1971.

It is quite difficult for us today to understand what life was like for the people who sailed from England on the Mayflower. The following comments were inspire...d by the writings of Martin Dexter. Today we live by the rule of law and get very concerned about leaders who attempt to overstep the limiting powers of governance and yet when the Mayflower sailed everything was governed by the King’s will. At the time of the sailing it would be another 22 years before the first newspaper was published and 109 years before a London daily paper was published. It was 28 years before Harvey published his discovery of the circulation of the blood. It was 48 years before a barometer became available, an instrument so essential for weather forecasting. It was sixty five years before the pendulum clock and another 115 years before an accurate chronometer was developed to aid navigation. It was 66 years before Newton began his train of thought that led to the laws of gravity and another72 years before his light experiments with prisms. It would be another 133 years before the science of electricity and 160 years before street lighting in London. It was 180 years before the steam engine and 219 before the first steam ship. At the time the Mayflower sailed the first telescopes were just coming into use their functional design having been perfected in around 1611.

You may have heard that pre-approval is a great first step in the homebuying process. But why is it so important? When looking for a home, the temptation to fall in love with a house that’s outside your budget is very real. So, before you start shopping around, it’s helpful to know your price range, what you’re comfortable within a monthly mortgage payment, and ultimately how much money you can borrow for your loan. Pre-approval from a lender is the only way to do this. Accor...ding to a recent survey from realtor.com, many buyers are making the mistake of skipping the pre-approval step in the homebuying process: Of over 2,000 active home shoppers who plan to purchase a home in the next 12 months, only 52% obtained a pre-approval letter before beginning their home search, which means nearly half of home buyers are missing this crucial piece of paperwork. This paperwork (the pre-approval letter) shows sellers you’re a qualified buyer, something that can really help you stand out from the crowd in the current ultra-competitive market. How competitive is today’s market? Extremely especially among buyers. With limited inventory, there are many more buyers than sellers right now, and that’s fueling the competition. According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), homes are receiving an average of 2.9 offers for sellers to negotiate, so bidding wars are heating up. Pre-approval shows homeowners you’re a serious buyer. It helps you stand out from the crowd if you get into a multiple-offer scenario, and these days, it’s likely. When a seller knows you’re qualified to buy the home, you’re in a better position to potentially win the bidding war and land the home of your dreams. Danielle Hale, Chief Economist for realtor.com notes: For ‘a buyer in a competitive market, it’s typically essential to have pre-approval done in order to submit an offer, so getting it done before you even look at homes is a smart move that will enable a buyer to move fast to put an offer in on the right home.’ In addition, today’s housing market is also changing from moment to moment. Interest rates are low, prices are going up, and lending institutions are regularly updating their standards. You’re going to need guidance to navigate these waters, so it’s important to have a team of professionals (a loan officer and a real estate agent) making sure you take the right steps along the way and can show your qualifications as a buyer at the time you find a home to purchase. Bottom Line In a competitive market with low inventory, a pre-approval letter is a game-changing piece of the homebuying process. If you’re ready to buy this year, reach out to a local real estate professional (who can also connect you with a trusted lender) before you start searching for a home.
