Another Tip From Your Local Contractor. Another tip from your Contractor, It's getting colder now. Make sure you get those hoses off of the outside faucets! They will be the first to freeze! It's not that hard to reconnect the hose if you need to use it, but remember to take it back off when your done! Frozen and busted pipes are no fun!! If you don’t need the faucet, go ahead and turn it off inside the house and drain the water out of the spigot. It’s a good idea to cover th...e faucet too! I’ve grown to like the Styrofoam ones. Easy on and easy off. If your cabinets / plumbing is on an exterior wall. Leave the doors open so the warmth can protect the pipes from freezing. Take a quick look at the weather stripping around your doors. It can get worn or damaged over time. If you can see light around the edge of the door, cold air can find its way in. Is there a gap at the bottom of the door? A rolled up towel or similar will take care of that until you get a new sweep installed. Same thing with windows. Are your gutters clean? Water backing up can make its way into the house. Or freeze and cause even more damage to the house. We can help with this if you need us to!! Another Tip From Your Local Contractor, Are you going to use a generator if the power goes out? Do you know how to do it safely? Have you researched this to be ...sure!!! First thing, if you have a proper backup generator with a transfer switch, most of this doesn’t apply to you, but reading it can’t hurt though. But for us others, we need to be careful using a portable generator to power our houses. A generator is a wonderful tool if you know how to use it. It can also be extremely dangerous if you don’t understand its operation!! Gasoline, electricity, motors and moving parts!! Be Careful!! Check for fuel leaks. Don’t store your fuel can next to the generator! The motor puts out Carbon Monoxide and must be used outdoors with good ventilation. The generator also needs to be secured because it vibrates and will move right where you don’t want it! One thing very few folks think about until it’s too late is construction generators are just that, construction generators and put out dirty power. It can fry electronics in just a second. The generators with built in inverters are safer and put out cleaner power but are more expensive. The generator itself must be sized to the load you want to put on it. None of the off the shelf generators can power your whole house!! There are many places with charts on the internet that show (in watts) what some items require (in watts) to operate. For instance, a coffee maker or hair dryer needs a large amount of power to operate!! Either one will make a generator cry trying to keep up. If you just want to run a cord in and plug up your frig and a light or 2, pay close attention to the cords you are using. Are they the proper size for the load? If a wire or cord gets warm, then it’s a potential fire hazard! Get a better cord OR don’t put that much of a load on the cord! Please be careful using generators and cords!! If you're more adventurous and use a temporary connection to your house wiring, Proceed with caution because this is very dangerous to do! BE SURE YOU KNOW HOW TO CONNECT THE POWER. BE SURE TO TURN OFF THE MAIN BREAKER!! If you don’t turn off the main breaker, you could back feed into the grid and endanger utility workers. Then you have the authority’s visiting you Be sure to disconnect everything that is not needed from your connection. Remember that a portable generator CANNOT provide enough power for your whole house. You will need to be selective on what items you want to use. You may even need to use only a few items at a time. Are you ready for the high winds and rain?? Have you taken down things that swing in the breeze but can hit the windows? Cindy Hall McDaniel pointed out our porch swing could hit the front windows in the wind picks up enough!! Walk around the house and take down things that could cause damage if the wind gets that bad. Even wind chimes and yard ornaments could go flying and cause damage. I went ahead and laid my windmill down next to the wall. Are your gutters clear?? There h...ave been some leaves falling here and it doesn't take much to clog a gutter enough to cause it to overflow in a downpour. Do you have the plastic chairs? Or the glass tables? Move them inside or flip them over so it's harder for the wind to blow them away. One of the last big storms, a friend had their trampoline fly out of the back yard and land across the street in the neighbor's yard!! Hopefully, a few minutes of precautionary work will save lots of headaches after the storm does whatever it's gonna do!! Be safe and if you need help getting ready, just give me a call. See more
