One of our clients found an injured squirrel in Grant Park this past weekend, and brought it to Dr. Annie, thinking it had been hit by a car. The squirrel had a lot of swelling on its head and a couple of small bleeding injuries to it’s face, which is consistent with head trauma that we commonly see with squirrels who are hit by cars. After a few days, the swelling started to subside with the help of medications and very diligent care. In spite of this, her head was still e...xtremely painful, and there was a hard protrusion on the side of her head. It became apparent eventually that this poor girl had been shot in the head by a pellet gun. The pellet entered one side of her head, and exited through the other side of her brain, but she was still left suffering and alive. Dr. Annie was able to surgical remove the pellet, and this animal is currently on a LOT of antibiotics and pain medications, in hopes that she can survive in spite of her brain injury. This kind of cruelty is so hard for us to understand. All animals are important, be they wild or domesticated. Squirrels are part of a healthy ecosystem, and we live in a city of trees, so causing intentional harm to a handful accomplishes nothing but making you a bad person. More will always come. We hope that sharing this story helps even just one person realize that these are funny, quirky little creatures that are valued and loved. Please don’t shoot them. See more

Each spring, Atlanta Audubon receives many calls and emails from people who have found a baby bird and want to help. Many times, the best thing to do is to leav...e the bird alone and let the parents continue caring for it. Here's a flow chart we created to help you decide. In some instances, the parent birds are not around in which case you will need to find a license wildlife rehabilitator to help. Atlanta Audubon is not a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility, but you can find a list of licensed GA rehabilitators on our website at https://www.atlantaaudubon.org/injuredorphaned-birds. Another resource, no matter where you are located is Animal Help Now. See more

Dear OAH Family, We wanted to express our appreciation for your patience, support, and adaptability during this strange and scary time. We know this is very stressful for everyone, and we thank you for hanging in there and working with us. We also wanted to give you some insight into how we’ve made these decisions and why they are important for our community. We realize that many animal hospitals are open full hours and letting clients into the building while disinfecting...Continue reading

We want to take a moment to update you on changing policies here at the animal hospital due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The health of our clients and our staff is just as important to us as the health of our pet patients! We are doing our best to comply with CDC recommendations to help limit the spread of Covid-19. Please review to following changes to be sure you aren’t affected! 1. If you have a scheduled appointment, and you have ANY kind of respiratory illness, or if you live with anybody who has a respiratory illness, please call to cancel or reschedule your appointment as early as possible. 2. We ask that you limit the physical number of people that you bring along with you to your appointment. Please don’t bring along any non-essential friends or family members. We know that schools have been dismissed unexpectedly, so if you are unable to procure childcare, please call to reschedule your appointment. 3. We always strive to maintain a high level of cleanliness in our facility, but we are currently doing a full disinfection of all commonly touched surfaces in each exam room between patients. This is also extending to commonly touched surfaces in every area of our hospital. 4. Would you like to wash your hands? Just ask! We have several sinks available and we encourage hand washing upon arrival or before leaving. 5. Please avoid hugging Carl. He can’t seem to help himself, and we are trying to get him to practice social distancing, but he doesn’t seem to understand why we are depriving him of his 1,000 best friends every day. It’s best to avoid him altogether. Our next step will be hanging a don’t hug me sign on him. These guidelines are especially important to us because we do have employees here who are classified as immunocompromised, or live with somebody who is immunocompromised. We are taking things very seriously to prevent danger to these folks, and we hope that you do as well. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. We will keep everybody updated if we make any changes to our policies as this situation develops further. Stay safe, and enjoy your vast quantities of toilet paper that you have no doubt hoarded at home!
