6th Cavalry Museum 15.12.2020

Today is the 79th Anniversary of the Attack on Pearl Harbor. The 6th Cavalry here at Fort Oglethorpe had been preparing for a polo game against the Bendabout Farms polo team when they heard the news. The game was canceled and the 6th quickly mustered to guard the Chattanooga area from any potential attacks. In just a few months, the 6th would leave Fort Oglethorpe to prepare for overseas service.

Happy Birthday to Charity Adams Earley! Born on this date in 1918, she would enlist in the WAAC in 1942. The first Black WAAC to commission, her Army career would lead to her becoming the CO of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Bn, the first all-Black WAC unit to serve overseas. We have a special connection to the 6888th, as the Third WAC Training Center at Fort Oglethorpe was the first location the unit assembled.

This week 6th Squadron, 6th Cavalry donated a terrain map used in Afghanistan to the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum Museum. LTC Rollie, CSM Giuseffi, MAJ... Kelly, CW4 Weekley, and SPC Anderson presented the donation. 6-6 Cavalry's Command Sergeant Major, CSM Giuseffi said the following about the importance of such a donation, "As veterans come and visit [the museum], they have a visual representation and can point to where they were. They can tell their families, 'This is where I've been in this country. This is where I was the first time. This is where I was the fourth time.'" Mr. Ken Bolke, the museum curator, echoed this sentiment. "It's one thing to read about your history, it's another thing to see your history. The objects of history tell a story of their own; we rely on the people who make history to bring these objects [to the museum]." The map, originally created in 2010, hung in the 6-6 Cavalry's conference room during TF Falcon. Since the surge, its estimated the terrain map witnessed at least four combat aviation brigades' deployments, including 1st CAB, 4th CAB, 10th CAB and 101st CAB. A big thank you to the Six Shooters for preserving this map. 10th CAB veterans: What other objects tell the story of 10th CAB? What would you want to show your family and friends? Attached pictures: (1) Terrain map, (2) Mr. Scanlin, museum director, and CSM Giuseffi shake hands, (3) LTC Rollins, CW4 Weekley, and Mr. Scanlin examine the map, (4) 6-6 Command Team poses in front of the terrain map, (5) Terrain map details.

I'm calling on all our FB friends to support the Kiwanis Club of Fort Oglethorpe's fund-raising auction. Look at these amazing items for the October 22 on-air TV auction on UCTV. The club is taking over Night Talk (9 pm - 11 pm) to auction these donations to raise money for local charities. The club has faithfully supported the museum since 2006 and now we get to return the favor and support them. This is the first installment of what's being auctioned so I'll post updates.
