Tuesday January 26, 2016, SWEA had their Mechanical E2E! Director of Product Development for the Energy Division, Stephen Spruell, presented on the jobs and problems Mechanical Engineers deal with on a day-to-day basis. In addition to gaining information on the Mechanical Engineering profession, SWEA students also competed in a competition introduced by Drew Pearson. The event required an array of abilities such as team work and problem solving skills. Participants, in teams ...of four, had to enclose two team members in a structure using only 30 sheets of newspaper, 10 beads, electrical and scotch tape, and two water bottles. Once time was called, only two team’s structures were still standing. These two teams were then judged on how it enclosed their two team members and how much weight each structure could hold. Since both could not hold weight, Team D was deemed the winner for the structure that enclosed the students the best. See more

Another E2E down!! The second Engineer-to-Engineer Exchange provided insight into the Industrial Engineering discipline. An overview of how to proceed in college and how to pursue/ what to expect in this career path were touched on by different Southwire engineers in that like field. The intro to Industrial Engineering was given by Josh Grooms and Hannah Thummel. Both are IE’s for Southwire and SWEA Coaches of Teams C and M. Furthermore, to solidify the E-to-E Exchange the teams were given a challenge. They had to create paper airplane factory to sell to customers while staying in specific parameters in 5 minute intervals. When the challenge time ended, Team D came out on top for their second E2E win of the year!

As scientists and mathematicians, we are problem solvers, finding solutions to the world’s toughest problems: Man on the Moondone; Vaccine to eradicate Poliodone; Clean watera bit more to be done. So, creating communities of technical excellence is right in our our wheel house. Carrolton, Georgia is one city where engineers are hard at work, some are still in high school!

Walk Thru #1 On Wednesday October 28, 2015, the SWEA teams had their first Walk Thru. In the audience was a mixed array of Southwire management and CHS staff. Each team, corporate and plant, went through their projects and answered questions from those who will be benefiting from the team’s findings. In their Walk Thrus, the teams included the following: their purpose, what they have accomplished, key findings, what they will do next, and issues requiring. By going through th...is process they can learn of the feedback people in Southwire have and allow others to make suggestions for how they should proceed. In addition to Southwire staff giving their opinions on the projects, each team’s accomplishments were also relayed to stakeholders and other management personnel to gain their feedback as well. This activity was a success and all presentations flowed smoothly! See more

Service and Progress As Georgia Tech’s base principle, the motto above defines their vision. To back up this motto and further set a foundation for the day, Andrea Jester presented Georgia Tech’s story, opportunities the school presents their students and admission statistics to SWEA. Following the presentation, the Teams split into groups lead by Southwire Coaches who were Alumni of Georgia Tech, Allee Armstrong and Drew Pearson. Each team was brought through Bobby Dodd St...adium and on to the Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering. Tom Lawley, Director of Development, led us through the Invention Studio which containing amazing tools such as laser cutters, 3D-printers, water jets and a wood shop. Continuing on the tour we were led to the Robotics and Intelligent Machine Lab to examine different robots built to ease dilemmas and respond to situations in which may be unsafe for humans to respond to. Concluding the day three students, a business major, aerospace engineering student, and biomedical engineering student, came to report to SWEA on their specialties and the benefits Georgia Tech has given them in their fields.
