I can't imagine what our teens are going through during this strange time. They've lost their routine, been separated from their friends and teammates, had an abrupt stop to their training schedule, had to accept their games/competitions and trips have been cancelled and may not be rescheduled. I am especially heart broken for our seniors (high school and college). I compare it to all of the stages of grief of suffering a season ending injury but never having a physical in...jury. I have wanted to try to let these teens know they have value and are important. It's been weighing heavy on my heart this week and I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass. I know it wasn't much but with each card I wrote, I thought of a memory we shared or discussion we had in the clinic and their impact on my life. I was able to make a few deliveries this week and it meant the world to me. I wasn't able to see all of them but did get to chat with a few from a distance and it made my week. I didn't realize how much I needed to see my people. I still have a few deliveries to finish next week but this week was the best week of COVID19 because I was able to share some laughs, funny stories and see the awesome smiles of some of my favorite people. I’ve been blessed to work with some of the most amazing young adults; they are smart, talented, kind, compassionate, dedicated, committed and I look forward to seeing the impact they will have on our world. Check on your people, spread joy and be the light you want to see in the world!

Is your new "work from home" setup causing you pain and discomfort? Are you limited with your activities at home due to pain? SterlingSMPT is here to help you! We are offering 2 treatment options at this time to allow you to continue living your best life and not be limited by pain and discomfort.... Telehealth and office visits Telehealth is a convenient way to seek treatment from the comfort and safety of your home but allows you to begin treatment NOW. This starts with a video call on your phone or computer with Dr. Julie Brooks Sterling for a movement assessment. A personalized treatment program is then created to address your specific limitations working on self-treatment techniques, stretches and exercises to get you back to pain-free activities. The compliant I hear most frequently now is: I'm working from home and my set up is killing my neck and back. Have you transitioned to a work from home set up? Are you struggling with ways to manage this "new" environment? During our Telehealth session we will go over your specific at home set up and discuss ways to improve your positioning and ergonomics to decrease pain and improve your home work station. For those requiring a more hands on approach, we are still seeing patients in the office on a limited schedule. Please call, text or email to see which treatment option is most appropriate for you and to schedule your appointment. Don't delay in addressing your pain, work set up or getting back to the activities you love. Spring is in the air and this is the time for you to get out, enjoy your yard/garden and live a healthy active life.

My mom is one of the few people I know who truly LOVES her job. She is a Physical Therapist and has been practicing for over 50 years. (Yes that means she is in her 70’s and still working!) I learned my passion for helping make a small difference in peoples lives from my mother. I distinctly remember watching her kind gestures, calm spirit and heart warming smile as the most healing forms of treatment she provided for her patients. It comes naturally to her and she doesn’t kn...ow any other way of life. Now she can also be tough, push you to your limits and never let you settle for less than what she thinks you are capable of also but seems to always do so with a smile. Her work is truly her calling and ministry and I feel blessed to share the same passion and ministry in my life. As a kid, I would go to conferences with her and didn’t realize that this would be my calling and career also. I distinctly remember being at the University of Georgia Sports Medicine Conference in Tifton, GA with her at the age of 12. We watched livestream of hip and knee replacements being performed over our breakfast session, did cadaver dissections and my mom would pay the student rate for me even though that was most typically the rate for current PT students, not 12 year olds! This week was the Combined Section Meeting for the APTA and my Mom and I spent a week in Denver, CO visiting friends, adventuring and attending our PT conference together. It’s been a great week of networking, learning, catching up with friends and spending time with my Mom. She is still passionate about the physical therapy field and is already planning our trip for the 2021 conference next year! I’m thankful that our careers allow us to spend time together learning how to be better clinicians for our patients but also time together making memories that will last a life time!

February is heart health awareness month. Knowing and understanding symptoms can be the difference in early intervention or waiting until it’s too late. 10 years ago today I had my first Electrophysiology study and cardiac ablation. I was 25 years old and besides a few knee surgeries in college, I was otherwise healthy. I had played sports my whole life, passed medical clearances, played 4 years of college soccer and never knew of any issues. When I was in PT school in ...St. Augustine, FL I started having symptoms which wouldn’t go away. Looking back, I probably had some of these symptoms throughout high school and college but never paid enough attention nor admitted that something felt off. I wrote off fatigue, difficulty staying fit for soccer and an occasional palpitation as normal. In PT school my symptoms were becoming more frequent and harder to ignore. I had always felt like I could control my heart rate but I had several episodes which I felt like I couldn’t control it anymore. My symptoms were now lasting longer and had a bigger impact on the rest of my day. During my second year of school we took CardioPulm class. The teacher described symptoms of sudden death which seemed all too familiar. After a short conversation with her after class, she had a cardiologist recommendation for me. I was not the typical cardiology waiting room patient. I appeared young healthy and active. After the battery of questions about excessive caffeine, sugar, energy drinks, and recreational drugs, they realized I may have something more serious going on. I wore a holter monitor for 24 hours and my follow up call was a recommendation to the specialist in Jacksonville, FL. After more testing they recommended an electrophysiology study and possible cardiac ablation. I had good results but unfortunately had to have a second procedure about a year later to fully address the problem. I am thankful for the doctors, staff, my family and friends for helping to ease the fear during that stressful time. I felt God had given me a new lease on life and I had a purpose of going through those issues to be able to help others in the future. I write all of this to encourage others to pay attention to your bodies and be aware of symptoms that seem out of the ordinary or off.

What is Blood flow restriction training? utilizes the application of an inflatable pneumatic cuff around a limb to limit the amount of blood flow available to the exercising muscle. What does it do? The goal is to fully occlude venous blood flow out of the exercising limb and restrict a certain percentage of blood flow into the exercising limb. ... Why is BFR useful? There is mounting evidence that now supports that low-load resistance training (20-40%RM) combined with blood flow restriction can similarly induce muscle hypertrophy and strength gains. Why does Sterling SMPT use BFR? BFR speeds up recovery times and gets people stronger, faster, utilizing lower load exercises that are friendly and safe the to healing joint, tendons, or other surgically repaired tissues. This allows us the benefits of high intensity or heavy loads without the side effects of heavy loading on the body. feel the burn without overloading the tissue #bloodflowrestriction #bfr #injuryrecovery #sportsinjury #physicaltherapy #kneeinjury #injuryprevention #trainsmarternotharder #sportsmedicine #suwaneega #johnscreekga #gwinnettcounty

If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life. Finding your true passion and purpose in life is a blessing. I think we are all called to a certain job or profession for a reason. Physical Therapy is hard. We often see people at some of the worse times in their lives and frequently in pain and very frustrated. It is a physically demanding job, requires many years of school, continuous reading, education and learning to keep up with the most effective trea...tments, skills to know the best form of treatment for each patient and the gut wrenching emotions of watching your patient accomplish a goal, get back on the field or just live life without constant pain. My goal is to help my patients understand that they have an active part in their recovery, they can do something to change their symptoms or pain and they are the catalyst for progress towards their goals. When people are in pain, they feel helpless and hopeless and my role is to encourage them to take those baby steps and trust the process. My job never stops, it’s not a 9-5 work day. My brain is constantly thinking of ways to help my patients and get them back to life. I have a passion for and truly love what I do and the most rewarding part of my job is seeing the smile on a face that once had a look of concern, pain and fear. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES DURING YOUR REHAB JOURNEY?

SterlingSMPT family, I would really appreciate it if you would do something for me that’s VERY easy! It only takes a few seconds, & would help my small business, especially for the holiday season! Facebook has a new feature & it takes seconds to do!... I’d love it if you could go to the top of the Sterling Sports Medicine & Physical Therapy page Scroll across the top, go to ‘COMMUNITY’ Click 'INVITE FRIENDS' Click ‘ALL' Wait 10-15 seconds for the invitations to send And it’s as simple as that! Supporting small businesses doesn’t require spending money. It’s as simple as sharing, liking and promoting us! Facebook has tricky algorithms so sometimes it’s hard for new people to find us. This would be a big big help! Thank you all for your support!
