Have you ever wondered what it looked like INSIDE the lighthouse walls? Wonder no longer! Astute visitors will note that our tower is shaped like a cone, but the stairs ascend within a straight column. This hints at the hollow spaces between the lighthouse's interior and exterior walls. The picture shows the Savannah grey brick of the tower without the characteristic white paint. One of these spaces was used to run the cables of the original grandfather-clock-like weight system that turned the flash panels of our lens. Have a look at the original plans for the lighthouse for a clear look at the architecture of the tower.

We’re excited to announce that we will begin welcoming visitors back to the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum on Monday, June 1! For our visitors, volunteers, and staff’s safety, we’ve made some changes to what a visit looks like that include: 1. All staff, volunteers, and visitors will wear nose and mouth coverings while in the museum buildings. A mask, bandanna, or a face shield works for this rule. 2. Following limited capacity guidelines set forth by the state of Georgia, we ...will only be allowing one party to climb the tower at a time. A party is defined as up to 10 people. Due to these regulations, you might experience longer wait times to enter our buildings. 3. Our hours have changed a little we’ll now be open Monday through Saturday 10AM to 5PM, and closed those days between 1 and 2 for additional cleaning of high touch surfaces. We’ll still be open on Sundays from noon to 5PM! We can’t wait to see all of our wonderful visitors and once again share the island’s icon with you! See more

We're called the St. Simons Lighthouse, but Brunswick got a bit of recognition on the ironwork up top to remind everyone we're a harbor lighthouse at heart.

We're wishing everyone a safe and Happy Memorial Day this weekend! One of the oldest lighthouse-related objects in our collection is this weathered American flag. Look closely and you'll notice that it is a 13 star flag - this particular version was created to celebrate the U.S. Centennial in 1876! It was provided to the St. Simons Station to be flown that year, just 4 years after the current lighthouse became active.
