I just listened to a Covid-19 briefing from Gov. Kemp and Public Health Commissioner Dr. Kathleen Toomey. Here are the highlights: As of yesterday, 535,558 Ge...orgians have been vaccinated, most are first doses, though some are 2nd doses. The state had 94,000 vaccinations by January 4, so that is a 466% increase in the last 17 days. The state is still only getting 120K doses per week and up until now 40% of those doses have been going to Walgreens and CVS for use in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Given the success of that effort, that 40% will be shifted to others in Phase 1A. The full 120K allotment will now go to others Phase 1A eligible. Pfizer is now allowing 6 shots instead of 5 per vial, which is also allowing more people to be vaccinated and 2nd doses are now being scheduled for those who got the 1st doses. Local Public Health Departments will be contacting those who received 1st doses for appointments. Fulton has the largest number of 1st dose individuals and it is working so those people can get a timely 2nd dose. The state is setting aside enough so that people in Fulton who got the 1st dose through the health department can get 2nd dose through health department. Those people should be contacted in the next few days. You can go anywhere to get vaccinated: you don’t have to get vaccination in home county. I may have misled in a previous statement based on some bad information I received. Go where you canwherever you can get an appointment. Despite the improvements in vaccinations, they counseled continued patience. The state still has far more demand than supply. Each week, the 120,000 doses must be split among 159 counties, 9 PH districts and 1700 providers, the shift of the 40% of the 120,000 to other Phase 1a individuals will open more appointments than we’ve had. The state will not be expanding eligible qualifications beyond 1A for now but will be announcing more mass vaccinations site soon. Georgia is informed on Thursday evenings how much allocation it is getting the next week and it is allocated locally after that number is received. Currently, the state has identified 5 cases of the variant virus that have been confirmed. The state anticipates additional cases because it spreads easily. They urged everyone to take extra precaution because it is easier to get it in public spaces than before. Deaths are going up as cases grow. It is critical everyone continue following the CDC guidelines wear masks, social distance, wash hands. The vaccine is here and therapeutics are much better to treat those with it, so the percentage of people dying is dropping. Anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19 was asked to consider donating plasma which helps in treating those who now have the disease. Statewide Covid hospitalizations today are 5332 the lowest in 2 weeks. This is still high too high, but the percentage of positive tests is down from 19.5 on January 8 to 16.5% today. Nevertheless, this is still higher than the summer surge. But the good news is the Christmas/New Year/thanksgiving surge is easing. But this is not an all -clear signalhospitals still can’t take another surge. They are using emergency beds to handle the current patient load. Please take responsibility for yourself and those around you. In tracking vaccine distribution, use the state DPH dashboard for Georgia rather than the CDC CDC is slow reporting. Georgia has conducted 130,000 more vaccinations than CDC is showing. There is at least a three-day lag between CDC and pH website. The State DPH website also will soon be showing the number of 1st and 2nd doses administered. The state continues working on a new vaccine management system for appointment setting and tracking vaccinations. They hope to have it operational by the end of the month. The state has enrolled 1700 providers, but it does not have adequate vaccine doses to activate them all. The Biden administration has plans for more vaccine manufacturing, but the state has not yet seen details or amounts that may be coming. Meanwhile, President Biden announced his 100 page Covid-19 plan today. He set a goal of administering 100 million coronavirus vaccines in the first 100 days of his presidency. He also mandated required mask-wearing in airports and certain modes of transportation, including trains and airplanes. Two Executive Orders establish the COVID-19 Pandemic Testing Board, which aims to increase access to tests in schools, workplaces and underserved communities in part by expanding the public health workforce and finding ways to procure and produce more supplies.
