The race began when the Jade Emperor, one of the most important Taoist deities, invited every animal in the world to join a race in which the winners would earn their places as zodiac signs, each representing an entire year. When one animal, the rat, encountered a river on the way to the finish line, it rode on the ox to get across. Once they reached land, the rat immediately jumped off of the ox and dashed directly to the finish line, leaving the ox in second place. Other animals quickly followed, and ten animals earned their spots. Meanwhile, the dog got distracted and began splashing around in the river, while the pig ended up in a food coma and fell asleep. They both eventually made it to the finish line in 11th and 12th place, respectively. This version of the story is what most Taiwanese people grew up with, but did you know that the cat also had the opportunity to become a zodiac sign? The story goes as follows: the cat and the rat were once very good friends, and the cat had asked the rat for a wake-up call on the day of the race. However, the rat broke its promise and never called the cat. Ultimately, the cat slept through the race and broke off its friendship with the rat, resulting in them becoming lifelong enemies.
