The Patch My name is Robert Harn. This is my first online post in a while and will probably be my last. I have known the "Red Douglas family" for over 50 years and have known the Kelly's for over 40 years. The Kelly's are trying to restore a piece of Augusta history, where so many of us spent our summers as kids. Dennis and Brian risked their lives to rescue my wife, myself, and our neighbors the Sigg's from the October 1990 flood. The Sigg boys both play collegiate golf (William at PC and Greyson soon to play at UGA). Ryder Cup type matches, involving The First Tee kids, were held at The Patch today. Let's pull for the Kelly brothers to restore this piece of Augusta history and give the girls and boys of Augusta another venue to learn the great game of golf!

History David Ogilvie left Scotland at the age of 18 to follow his dream of playing professional golf. He was initially asked to join a golf club in Florida, but while en route he traveled through Augusta, where they had a 9 hole golf course - Bon Air Golf club. Ogilvie was so impressed with area and challenge, he decided to settle in Augusta. Ogilvie further developed the existing Bon Air Golf club with Dr. William Henry Harison into an 18 hole course - the first in Augusta.... The club was later renamed and is nowadays known as Augusta Country Club. In 1928 Ogilvie designed the Augusta Municipal golf course (now The Patch), which over the years has changed a little, however you can still see the Ogilvie influence through it’s design (ie. 2 loops of nine holes, par 3s in different directions, a variety of elevations, a mixture of right to left holes and left to right holes and a test for every club in the bag). As well as designing courses, David Ogilvie also played in 10 US Opens - he was by all accounts an excellent player. He played with many greats or the era. Ogilvie traditionally played with a Tom Morris putter he brought with him from Scotland. His involvement with Augusta Country Club continued for 45 years and during this time his wife gave birth on the clubhouse porch to David Ogilvie Jr. who would go on to be a fine professional golfer himself and would play at the first ever Masters tournament in 1934. Ogilvie Jr. would also have a son who would follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps. David Ogilvie III was inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 1990. When inducted, David Ogilvie III had served as head professional for thirty-three years combined at Country Club of Peoria and Flossmoor Country Club. Dave spent two years on the PGA Tour, setting several course records, but is best known as an innovative working club professional. A recipient of the Section’s Horton Smith Award, he was voted Illinois PGA Professional of the Year a record three times. He served the Illinois PGA in every capacity including president for the 1985-1986 terms. In 1986, David Ogilvie III received the ultimate award, recognized by his peers as National PGA Professional of the Year.
