Blake Hill-Saya (Author/Opera Singer), second cousin Brandi Stewart and many past and present board and community leaders in Durham, NC, this family legacy project is now available to the public!! I hope you will make this a part of your summer reading list and share with others. As I reflect on the work my Great-Great Grandfather's (Aaron McDuffie Moore and John Merrick - business partners who became family) and Cousin (C.C. Spaulding) were able to accomplish and legacies they left for us to uphold I've learned and listened at many a family table how, "money may provide options but education is power beyond measure and will stand the test of time long after the money runs out." This book details Dr. Moore's life, commitment to his family and community, faith, and relationships among fellow pioneers of his time. As he navigated seemingly daunting obstacles like Jim Crow and the 1918 flu pandemic (timely given our current challenges) I don't have to wonder how/why I wake up ready to tackle each day and face any challenge that awaits me ready to go! In his honor I can not help but remain dedicated to my family, upholding my legacy, teaching our history to my son and committed to serving my community whether it supports me or not. My vision is grounded in the grind not waiting for anyone or anything to agree or understand. I'm fortunate to be able to know "What my ancestors did, so I don't have to ask or wonder what would they have done?" For whatever obstacles seem to lie in your path, today, tomorrow or in the unforeseeable future, I hope this story will inspire you too. Know your history and embrace the grind!
