Handcrafted souvenirs make wonderful gifts and home decorations, and the most well-known Russian craft is the matryoshka doll, or painted nesting doll. But do you know the symbolism of these mementos? When the early nesting dolls were created, all of them were presented with females as their biggest dolls, because some of the main symbols of the matryoshka dolls are depicting a woman’s fertility and their motherhood. The shape of the big-bellied doll almost portrayed a mothe...r’s stout figure and her significance in the family by the nesting of her children dolls inside. Mothers play a big role in the traditional Russian family; being the bearer of life and her capability to multiply her seeds are just some of them. In the country, having a big family is considered as a common practice and even an important one; there are usually more than three children, as well as members of the extended family live under one roof with them. Each member of the family is believed to have their own unique role in the household, and it’s the mother who serves as the foundation of the home. Want to see how these matryoshka are made? The Golden Week (Apr. 29 - May 5) is a series of four national holidays within a week. Instead of just giving people those four holidays off, many offices end up closing for about 7-10 days, giving their employees a full week of freedom. The Golden Week becomes one of Japan's three busiest holiday seasons, besides New Year's and the Obon week. People take vacations, travel the country, or go abroad, and generally have a great time regardless of the crowds. But why all this week-long holiday fun? Why do Japanese people get a full week off to do whatever they like, and we don't? Watch the video below if you want to learn what Golden Week is all about! https://youtu.be/A2l9hg5AXAc?t=134 #goldenweek #japanese #UNG #SLI #summerlanguageinstitute #arabic #korean #russian #chinese
What’s your Zodiac sign? is a question commonly asked in the Western world. But in East Asian nations like South Korea, you’re more likely to hear, What’s your blood type? That’s because for the past century, many Koreans have associated different blood types with specific personality characteristics/traits that can determine one’s likability, romantic compatibility, and even health status. While not everyone believes in this, expect to hear about it while you’re in South Korea. #summerlanguageinstitute #SLI #UNG #southkorea #Korean #arabic #chinese #japanese #russian
