Merry Christmas!! December 22, 1864 I beg to present to you as a Christmas gift the City of Savannah with 150 heavy guns and plenty of ammunition and also about 125,000 bales of cotton, General Sherman wrote in a letter to President Lincoln. The brief message came as a huge relief to Lincoln, who had been out of touch with Sherman for several weeks, since the Major General has embarked from Atlanta on his March to the Sea. History continues telling the story! This just popped up from Visit Savannah, originally posted in 2013.

Did you know the Green-Meldrim House is actually the parish house of St. John's Church in Savannah? The Meldrim family sold the home to the church for its preservation.

Imagine who came to dine? Lincoln? Sherman? It’s all been preserved! You can see part of the Green family’s silver collection, which includes sterling, coin, and plated examples and was sourced from England and the Northeast. The oldest pieces in the collection, flatware featuring the family crest and the initial G, are the most visually interesting examples in the collection, and would have made quite a presentation on the family’s table and sideboard alongside the white and gold ceramic service. Open today for tours at 10:00 and the last tour is at 3:30. Free parking! In the St. John’s lot at Whitaker and Harris.
